The first two months after the storm were some of the hardest, but also the most humbling. With the inn buried in over three feet of thick, caked mud, it was hard to imagine how we would even begin to dig out. But we weren’t alone. Volunteers from near and far came to help us stabilize the structure and keep it from collapsing. The 101st Airborne arrived and spent days shoveling mud from inside the inn, working tirelessly to clear out what the floodwaters had left behind. In the basement, where the mud and debris were packed from wall to wall, volunteers used pitchforks because standard shovels simply couldn't cut through it. Piece by piece, they helped us salvage what equipment we could save, offering their time, strength, and compassion when we needed it most. Their support gave us not just physical help, but the emotional lift to keep going.
